The Differences Between Viagra, Levitra and Cialis
Filed under: Cialis, Erectile Dysfunction, Sexual Health
Erectile dysfunction (ED), which was previously known as impotence, is a condition that can affect men, especially as they get older. It was once thought to be an entirely psychological condition; but the medical community has come to the conclusion that the majority of cases are caused by physical factors, such as illness. However, psychological elements, such as stress, still play a regular part in ED diagnoses.
There are several treatments for ED currently available and the three major medications in the market are Viagra, Levitra and Cialis. Viagra is the oldest and probably the most present in the pharmaceutical industry. Continuing developments in the drug treatment field mean that the introduction of Levitra and Cialis has made serious gains on Viagra’s market share. In 2011 Cialis became the leading global ED medication with the largest share of the market.
The three medications all work in similar ways and it is mostly the timing and length of the effects of the drug which differ. Cialis is the longest lasting of the drugs, and this has led to it being referred to as ‘the weekend pill’ because its effects will last around 36 hours. It also has the benefit that it has the fastest onset at around 15 minutes. The effects of Viagra and Levitra both onset in around 30 minutes and these will last for about four and five hours respectively.
It is sometimes the case that one ED medication will not work on a patient and therefore another one may need to be tried. Unfortunately, because the drugs have a similar chemical makeup, it is possible that none of the three will work if one has failed. That said, because of the very limited side effects of all three medications, you will be able to try another without any additional risks. To ensure optimal safety it is advisable to seek medical advice if you are in any doubt about switching medications.
