Although the sexually transmitted infection Chlamydia is now one of the most common of the diseases caused through sexual contact, few if any know what to look for or to expect if they have the infection. Chlamydia symptoms usually appear between 1 and 3 weeks after exposure but may not emerge until much later. Chlamydia is known as the ‘silent’ disease as in many people it produces no symptoms. It is estimated that 70-75% of women infected with Chlamydia have no symptoms and a significant proportion of men also have no symptoms.

Women may see an increase in vaginal discharge caused by an inflamed cervix, the need to urinate more frequently, or pain whilst passing urine. Men are more likely to notice Chlamydia symptoms than women; these can include a white or cloudy and watery discharge from the penis that may stain underwear and can cause a burning sensation and/or pain when passing urine. The only sure way to know if you have Chlamydia, or any other STD, is to have a test at one of the many STD test centres that are located throughout London and other major cities such as Manchester and Birmingham for example.
