As men grow older, many experience thinning or loss of hair on the scalp.  This may cause no problem or embarrassment to some men; after all it hasn’t affected the sex appeal of movie stars such as Patrick Stewart or Sean Connery, but to other men this common condition cause of lack of confidence and depression.

Although there are many solutions, from highly obvious wigs to hair implants, an easier, more discreet and effective solution is the use of medication.

One of the medications available on the market for male hair loss is Propecia, a drug that prevents testosterone (a hormone required for male body hair), converting to dihydrotestosterone in the body.

Women or children should never take Propecia; in fact they should never handle the tablets, particularly a woman who is pregnant or is planning a pregnancy as they can cause birth defects.  If handled by mistake, wash hands in hot, soapy water and contact an appropriate person for medical advice.

A man planning to begin a course of Propecia should consult with their GP if they have any liver disease, a bladder muscle disorder, prostrate cancer or any form of bladder or urine problems.

Propecia should be taken for at least three months before any benefits are evident and treatment should be taken continuously or else any hair growth will be lost.

If after twelve months of treatment hair loss is not reversed then Propecia is not the drug for you.
