Sexually transmitted diseases are prevalent in the United Kingdom, making it important for a sexually active adult to have regular sexual checks to identify and diagnose STDs. There are several methods to test for sexually transmitted diseases, otherwise known as sexually transmitted infections, your local STD test centre in London will advise you the method they will use, which will depend on your symptoms, should you display any.

A sexually active adult should submit themselves to testing as soon as symptoms arise, if not immediately after any unprotected sex or sexual activity. Sexual testing and screening at the private London clinics is completely confidential. You may, if you wish, have an STD test undertaken anonymously if you prefer, but what is important is that you have frequent sexual checks to ensure you are clear of infection.

Summer social contacts

With the onset of the warmer weather we tend to become more sociable and to get out and enjoy the summer days and nights. This is the time of relaxing outside at the pub and we are more likely to make more social contacts than when it is cold and raining. Inevitable this can also mean that casual sex is also on the agenda with inhibitions lowered through alcohol. Herein lays the danger!

Having casual sex, particularly with multiple partners can mean the likelihood of contracting a sexually transmitted disease (STD) which can be very serious. An example of one such STD is the dramatic increase in the rate of infection from Chlamydia. This sexually transmitted infection is the most common STD in the world with approximately 89 million people worldwide that have been diagnosed with Chlamydia. Worryingly about 75 percent of women and 50 percent of men who have chlamydia have no symptoms. If symptoms do appear they emerge about one to three weeks after infection.

If you believe that you may have contracted this or any other STD, a test can be arranged in London and throughout the UK, when you can be informed and essential treatment can begin.

The government has set a target to have at least 17% of all young people screened for the STD Chlamydia which is still on the increase in the UK. It is now estimated that up to one in ten 15-24 year olds has the disease, double that of a decade ago. Figures reveal that as few as 5% of young people have been tested for Chlamydia and health experts suggest that 35% is the figure that is needed if we are to prevent the disease from spreading.

Anyone who has any symptoms of Chlamydia or feels that they may have contracted the disease is urged to take an STD test straight away. The test can be undertaken in London and many centres throughout the UK including major cities such as Manchester and Birmingham. The test is completely confidential and the result will be given to you quickly, by ‘phone, in person or by post. The sooner the result is with you, the earlier treatment can begin should you be suffering from the Chlamydia infection.

There are two first class STD clinics in Manchester which provide testing for gonorrhea as well as all other types of sexually transmitted diseases. Gonorrhea is the second most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK and the number of cases is rising every year. Young men aged 20-24 years and women between the ages of 16 and 19 are most commonly affected. Around half of women and one in ten men who have contracted gonorrhea do not experience any symptoms, which means it can often go untreated for some time.

If you are sexually active and particularly have multiple partners, it makes sense to check to see if you are clear of any form of STD. The tests are quick and simple and are carried out in complete confidence, anonymously if preferred. The results will be given to you quickly, either by telephone, in person, or they can be sent to you by post. The sooner you know whether you have an infection, the quicker that treatment can begin.

Do not delay that STD test!

There is often delay between becoming infected with an STD and the infection being detectable by testing. During this period the infection may be transmissible. If you fall into the category of a person who has regular sex with multiple partners, or male same sex you should arrange an STD test to determine if you are clear of infection.

Having a test is not a substitute for safe sex and precautions should always be employed. Tests by definition are only informative and not preventative, and while important in keeping oneself and others informed of a partner’s STD status, they do not take the place of preventative safer sex practices, which would include caution in selecting partners. Having an STD test in London or one of the other major centres in the UK is common sense as they are essential in the early treatment of STDs, and most STDs are treatable once discovered.

With millions of new cases of infections every year in the UK, STDs are a danger that everyone needs to be aware of. There are many STD testing clinics in the UK and Birmingham is well served by major provider with three centres based right in the city centre as well as modern suites at Edgbaston and Solihull.

Many people are unaware of the circumstances they should take a test but here are five good reasons to contact a test centre. You have a one night stand and you can be at risk of infection. Before having unprotected sex with a partner, it is recommended that both you and your partner take some comprehensive STD tests. You have become pregnant and need to be reassured that you are clear of infection. If you have three or more sexual partners in one year, it is strongly recommended that you undergo comprehensive STD testing, even if you engage in protected sex with all of them.  You or your partner are injecting drugs because while some STDs can only be contracted through direct sexual contact, HIV, hepatitis and several other STDs are transmitted through contact with infected blood.

General guidelines would suggest that if men have no symptoms then it is not necessary to have routine screening at a local STD screening clinic. However for those who are sexually active and may have multiple partners it makes sense to have a regular check.

If your sexual practices include having sex with other men, testing is highly recommended. These tests should include annual screening for HIV, syphilis, Chlamydia and gonorrhea. HIV and syphilis can be life threatening if untreated, and Chlamydia and gonorrhea can put you at greater risk of acquiring HIV and other STDs. Taking an STD test in London or other major cities in the UK is simple and is completely confidential.

If you’re having sex, you may also be experiencing STD symptoms and these can occur no matter what type of sex you indulge in be it vaginal, oral or anal, use of condoms or not. Although condoms when correctly and consistently used are highly effective for reducing transmission of STDs, unless you totally abstain, nothing is 100% effective, particularly certain types of infection, such as genital warts and genital herpes.

STD symptoms can be pretty obvious although in certain cases they may not show obvious outward signs. Many sexual infections can be treated easily and completely eliminated, whilst others may require more intense and long term treatment. The only way to be certain that you have an STD is to undertake a test at one of the test centres in London or other major centers throughout the UK. If you are diagnosed with an STD, be treated and also it is essential to inform any partners so that they can be evaluated and treated. If untreated, STDs can increase your risk of acquiring another STD such as HIV.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that many believe was an old fashioned disease that has “gone away”. The reverse is quite the opposite as the infections is increasing and is a potentially life threatening bacterium that increases the likelihood of acquiring or transmitting HIV. It is passed from person to person through direct contact with a syphilis sore. These sores appear mainly on the genitals, vagina, anus, or in the rectum.

For many people that are infected symptoms may not appear for many years, but they still remain at risk if not treated. The first thing that a person who may they are at risk should do is to have a test at one of the private clinics in London test centres, or one of the many others in the UK. The test is a simple blood test and the result will be given to you quickly either in person, by post, or if preferred by telephone. The sooner the infection is detected the sooner treatment can begin with antibiotics to ensure an effective cure.
